Ever since I took Jane Davies’s 5-day Layering and Excavating workshop, I’ve been obsessed with lines. The first day she showed is a short slide show and had us do line drawing exercises. The following evening I began to really think about drawing lines and all the ways I might make a line.
Once I got home, I did a number of line drawing exercises to see what I could discover. The drawing above came out of that drawing session. I tried to clear my mind (a difficult task) and simply be present to drawing lines slowly. I imagined the lines leading somewhere, to meet other lines and then traveling off the page to some unknown place. The result reminded me of roads I’d seen from an airplane or lines on a topographical map. And there an idea for a series was born: Mind Travel.
